Honoring Our Heroes
On November 11, we pause to honor those who have served and sacrificed. In Canada and other Commonwealth countries, Remembrance Day commemorates members of the armed forces who lost their lives in service, while in the United States, Veterans Day recognizes all military veterans for their dedication and courage.
Music plays a powerful role in these observances. This week, we’re featuring our new song, “Thank You,” along with a collection of Remembrance Day and Veterans Day resources to help you plan meaningful classroom lessons and ceremonies. Explore these and more in the November 11th Unit on MusicplayOnline.
Written by Central Okanagan music teacher Gwen Plitt, “Thank You” was inspired by the words of newcomer Syrian students reflecting on the “freedom to go outside and play.” Over the past six years, students across the district have performed this heartfelt song at Remembrance Day ceremonies, and students added ASL to make the performance even more meaningful.
Ms. Plitt shares, “Finding the right song for Remembrance Day is always a challenge, but when the words ‘Thank You’ came to mind, I thought, that’s exactly what we want to say.” She describes the joy of hearing her students sing it each year and how shared songs help build a strong sense of community: “It’s an amazing feeling to be in the gym with all the students singing together. I hope every teacher gets to experience that someday.”
Now available on MusicplayOnline, “Thank You” can be used for Remembrance Day, Veterans Day, and in French, offering a meaningful way to honor our heroes through music.
