Melody Flashcard Games

Help your Grade 1–5 students strengthen their sight-singing and note-reading skills with Melody Flashcards. The Melody Flashcard Kit from the Musicplay Store features melodies derived from songs used on MusicplayOnline and familiar patterns to read and sing.

The flashcards in the kit are sequenced for progressive learning and are provided in three keys (C, F, and G), giving students opportunities to practice essential melodic patterns such as SM, LSM, SMD, MRD and LSMRD. Each card is color-coded to help quickly identify levels and select the right material for each class.

Preparing the cards is simple: two flashcards are printed on each piece of cardstock, so just print, cut, and use! Laminate them for extra longevity, or use them as-is—they’re designed to be durable even without laminating.

Bonus Tip: Did you know MusicplayOnline has printable Melody Flashcards? In the Solfa Practice section, simply select the solfa patterns you’re focusing on. Then, under Extra Resources, you’ll find flashcards in the Melody Hunt resources in multiple key signatures.

This week we are featuring some fun ways to use Melody Flashcards!

Which Flashcard Did I Sing?

  • Choose four flashcards in the same key and display them for your students to see. Sing one of them. Ask them to identify which flashcard was sung.

Melody Canons:

  • Choose four flashcards in the same key (you can choose from several different levels) and use the four measures as a canon.

Flashcard Turnover:

  • Choose two to four flashcards in the same key. Display them for your students to see. Have the students sing them. When they know them all, turn one card over so that they do it from memory. Continue until all the cards are turned over. Then have your students notate them.

Name That Tune!

  • Choose four to five songs from the flashcard list that your students know well and write the titles on the board. Show the flashcards in random order and have your students match the flashcard to the title.
