Sing-o!
Christina Huang, who teaches at Finch P.S. in Toronto sent me the Sing-o Activity to share with teachers in my newsletter. This is a great activity for children in your class to learn about their classmates, and at the same time, learn or review some interesting musical facts. It's also a great activity to do with your choir or band to help build ensemble.
Directions: Use Sing-o just like People Bingo where students mingle and find someone who can do something in one of the boxes:
1. The person must actually do the activity in the box. (The only one this will not work for is on the first card “ . . . plays an INSTRUMENT”, unless it’s something you have in the room!)
2. The student must know/learn the person’s name before writing it in the box.
3. Depending on the number of students, each person’s name can only be used once (or twice). The kids can ask you too!
4. If they get a line, they can shout out “Sing-O!” and then show you, but continue on until everyone has had time to mingle (or you can tell them to get two lines, or a full card!).
5. To “take up” the card, read out the activity and ask students who they wrote down
– then the person must do that activity in front of the class!
The first card is intended for Grades 2 and up for the beginning of the year, with the goal of having the Grade 1s able to do it by the end of the year.
The second card is meant for Junior grades and up. For my American friends, white-out O Canada, and replace with The Star Spangled Banner.... or, see if your students can do some research and learn about their neighbours to the north!
Thank you Christina for sharing this activity!!!
