Valentine's Word Composition
With Valentine's Day approaching, consider this versatile activity suitable for different grade levels. Choose rhythms to match your students' abilities. Introducing slightly more challenging rhythms can be a valuable experience for them. You can access this worksheet here: What Makes a Good Friend? Create Word Rhythm Worksheet
Various ways to incorporate this activity are:
- Warm-Up: Practice familiar rhythm patterns, then have students transfer the patterns to body percussion or non-pitched percussion instruments.
- Create a "B" Section: Use this rhythmic activity to develop a B section or Rondo in conjunction with other songs.
- Create an Ostinato: Create a 4 or 8 beat ostinato to play along with songs such as "I Like You” or “Love Somebody”. Transfer the ostinato to body percussion or non-pitched percussion instruments while singing the song simultaneously.
- Assessment Tool: Use the worksheets above to assess reading, writing, and creating rhythm patterns.
