Fall Songs and Storybook Connections
Fall Favorite Songs, Singing Games, and Storybook Connections!
Fall has arrived, and with it come some of my favorite classroom themes, songs, and activities to share with students. Autumn is such a rich season for music-making—it brings opportunities to celebrate the changing seasons, connect movement and play with singing games, and weave in storybooks that spark imagination.
This week, I’m highlighting some of my go-to fall singing games and songs, paired with storybook connections you can easily bring into your classroom. I love incorporating picture books into music lessons—singing and reading together creates a joyful and memorable experience, while also building literacy skills in a natural and engaging way.
Whether you’re looking for fresh ideas to welcome the season, activities to get your students moving and singing, or meaningful ways to connect music and literacy, you’ll find plenty of inspiration here. Let’s jump into fall with music, play, and stories that your students will love!
Watch the video below to see how you can use SCARVES or PAPER LEAVES to bring this song to life through creative movement!
Storybook Connection:
- Leaf Man written and illustrated by Lois Ehlert
Game Instructions: Choose five students to be the guessers or "Cooks" and have them come to the front of the room. Sing the song together, and secretly give feathers to five students in the class. When given a feather, at the end of the song each student sings, “I am a turkey.” The five guessers then try to identify who the turkeys are. After each round, choose five new guessers and continue the game. This version also provides a great opportunity to assess individual singing. Alternate Version: If a guesser correctly identifies a turkey, they stay at the front and continue playing. This adds a fun challenge to the game!
