This will be a challenge for your Grade 4-5-6 students, but you could use just the chant with Grade 1-2-3 and have them develop some ostinatos to perform with it.
- For your younger students, teach them the chant while they keep a beat
- Have them create ostinato patterns using ideas from the poem For example: Back to School
- divide the class into two groups
- have one group say the chant while the other performs the ostinato
- transfer the ostinato to non-pitched instruments
- For your older students, teach the chant and the body percussion
- The patschen in the first system is done: bum, bum, thigh, thigh, chest, chest
- When the students are confident, try the body percussion without words
