## Honoring Our Heroes
November 11 is a time to honour and remember those who have served and sacrificed. In Canada, we observe Remembrance Day, while in the United States, Veterans Day recognizes all who have served in the military.
Music is a meaningful way to bring students together for these important occasions. This week, we're sharing a few song choices to help you plan your Remembrance Day or Veterans Day school service. Whether you're looking for a song for your choir or a piece for your whole school to sing, we have some suggestions for you!
Find these songs and more teaching resources in the [November 11th Unit on MusicplayOnline](https://musicplayonline.com/units-list/november-11th/).

## [Thank You By Gwen Plitt - Musicplay General Songs](https://musicplayonline.com/songs/thank-you/)
Written by Central Okanagan music teacher **Gwen Plitt**, *“Thank You”* was inspired by the words of newcomer Syrian students reflecting on the *“freedom to go outside and play.”* Over the past six years, students across the district have performed this heartfelt song at Remembrance Day ceremonies, and students added ASL to make the performance even more meaningful.
Ms. Plitt shares, “Finding the right song for Remembrance Day is always a challenge, but when the words *‘Thank You’* came to mind, I thought, *that’s exactly what we want to say.*” She describes the joy of hearing her students sing it each year and how shared songs help build a strong sense of community: *“It’s an amazing feeling to be in the gym with all the students singing together. I hope every teacher gets to experience that someday.”*
Now available on [MusicplayOnline](https://musicplayonline.com/), “Thank You” can be used for Remembrance Day, Veterans Day, and in French, offering a meaningful way to honor our heroes through music.

Teaching Suggestions:
- Candlelight Performance: Create flashlight candles for students to hold. Have students turn on their “candles” one at a time as they sing.
- Remembrance Day Ceremony: Denise shared an idea from a school that created a wreath with six candles. A student representative from each grade was invited to light a candle in honour of veterans while the choir sang *Just One Candle*. For a safer alternative, use battery-operated candles.
