Music Bump – A New Game & Center on MusicplayOnline
Looking for a fresh game or center your students will love? Music Bump is an easy-prep activity that doubles as both! With two levels available, students get practice reviewing and identifying rhythms and rhythmic values. This week, we’re excited to share Level Two of this new resource.
Music Bump - Level 2
Game Purpose:
- Students identify and review the number of beats for rhythms in a 4/4 time signature.
- Recommended for Grades 3–6.
Supplies Needed:
Rhythm Dice- Use pre-made rhythm dice purchased from the Musicplay Store, or
- Make your own dice using wooden or foam cubes and write rhythms on each side
- Label each side with: Quarter note, Pair of eighth notes, Quarter rest, Half note, Dotted half note, Whole note
- Two different colors (one color per player).
- Print on cardstock and laminate for durability and repeated use.
- Provide copies of the “Cheat Sheet” for students or display it for reference during the activity.
Game Set-Up:
- Students work with a partner.
- Each pair needs:
- Two rhythm dice
- One Level Two game sheet
- 10 tokens or stacking cubes per player (each player uses a different color)
Game Directions:
- Roll two rhythm dice.
- Add the total number of beats for both rhythms.
- Example:
- Quarter note (1 beat) + whole note (4 beats) = 5
- Pair of eighth notes (1 beat) + half note (2 beats) = 3
- Example:
- Place one token on the corresponding number space.
- If your partner already has a token on that space, you may bump it and replace it with your own.
- If a player stacks two tokens on the same space, that space is locked and cannot be bumped.
- The first player to place all 10 tokens on the board wins.
- Play again if time permits!
