Teaching Suggestions:

**Teach the Bass Line:** Use speech and body percussion to introduce the bass line with the phrase: *“Cross it over” (3x), “Cross and stop!”*

1. Model the speech and body percussion for students.
2. Practise the pattern while singing the song.
3. Once students are confident, transfer the pattern to instruments.

- **Body Percussion Pattern (Repeat 3x):**

    - **Cross** – Pat right leg with right hand.
    - **it** – Pat left leg with left hand.
    - **ov** – Cross right hand over to pat the floor (or space) on your left.
    - **er** – Pat left leg with left hand.
- **Ending: “Cross and stop!”**

    - **Cross** – Pat right leg with right hand.
    - **and** – Pat left leg with left hand.
    - **stop!** – Cross right hand over to pat the floor (or space) on your left.

**Teach the Soprano and Alto Metallophone Part:** Use speech and body percussion to introduce this part.

1. After each phrase, *“Winter is here,”* have students say *“Brr…”* while snapping their fingers.
2. Practise adding the snaps and speech while singing the song.
3. Transfer the pattern to high and low C on the metallophones.

**Optional:** This part also works well on glockenspiels, if available. I also simplified this part from the original arrangement, removing the additional notation in the sixth measure.

**Finger Cymbals:** Have students play the finger cymbals on the strong beat (beat 1) of each measure in 3/4 time. I simplify this part by removing the additional notes in measure 7.

Teacher Tip: Rather than presenting the notation to the students, I created an additional chart for a simplified visual. If you would like a copy of this chart, click on the link  or image below:

Extension Ideas:

- **Writing & Creating:** Create new verses featuring activities such as sledding, skating, skiing, walking, hockey, or soccer.
- **Playing & Creating:** Set instruments in C pentatonic and invite soloists or small groups to improvise on C-D-E-G-A between repetitions of the song.
- **Movement:** Create movements to represent each activity in the verses. Small groups can perform their movements during the instrumental improvisations.
