Campfire Unit on MusicplayOnline
As the weather warms up and thoughts turn to summer, the Campfire Unit on MusicplayOnline is full of fun songs and games. In my classroom, I like to begin by teaching a few familiar campfire songs and games that I remember singing and playing at summer camp. To me, campfire songs are tunes that are easy for all ages to sing along with. You’ll find tons of great choices in the Campfire Unit song list.

Once students are familiar with a few songs and games, I love to set up a special “Camp Day” with stations inspired by the unit. One station features a campfire setup with ukuleles and printed copies of familiar songs for students to sing and play together. At the other stations, students enjoy some of the musical games featured in the unit. This week, we’re excited to feature one of the songs and games from the Campfire Unit!

Going on a Picnic

Teaching Suggestions:
This song is included to give students an opportunity to create their own verses. Encourage each student to think of something real or silly to bring on a picnic or to the playground. A printable is available on the song page for students to write their new verses.
Extension Ideas:
If you have picnic or play food props available, invite students to choose items to bring on their picnic and include them as they sing the song.
Try a memory game. Have students sit in a circle. The first player begins by saying, “I’m going on a picnic, and I’m going to bring a cupcake.” The next player repeats the first item and adds a new one: “I’m going on a picnic, and I’m going to bring a cupcake and strawberries.” Continue around the circle, adding a new item with each turn and trying to remember the full list. For an added challenge, students can make the game alphabetical by choosing items in alphabetical order. Visual flashcards or picture cards can also be used to help students remember the growing sequence of items.
Telephone Game
. Printable flashcards at various levels are also included in the unit for the game:
